Sightsavers
Our goal is to prevent avoidable blindness and fight for the rights of people with disabilities. We prevent sight loss and avoidable blindness in some of the poorest parts of the world, by treating conditions such as cataracts and fighting debilitating eye diseases. We promote equal opportunities for people with disabilities and we work with governments and local communities around the world to tackle the problems at the root of avoidable blindness.
The British Empire Society for the Blind was founded in 1950 by Sir John Wilson, himself blinded as a schoolboy. In its first year, it formed national organisations for blind people in six countries and in 1957 changed its name to the Commonwealth Society for the Blind. It was given royal status by the Queen a year later, becoming the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind (RCSB). In 1986 the TV programme Blue Peter launched its ‘Sight Savers’ appeal, raising more than £2 million for eye care across Africa, and the society subsequently adopted the title Sightsavers.
Rickmansworth Baptist Church supports xx through the retiring offering after morning worship.
